Only the Lake Knows
Every summer, Kessa Hayes knew exactly where to find Wes Martin. Across the lake. Their families spent years returning to the same two houses in the same small southern Georgia town, where Kessa and Wes grew up swimming after dark, stealing each other’s towels, racing boats across the water, and talking long after everyone else had gone to sleep. Until one summer changed everything. Two years ago, one night ended their friendship. Wes disappeared from Kessa’s life without an explanation she could understand, and she eventually stopped waiting for one. Now twenty and home from college for summer break, Kessa is determined to prove she has moved on. She returns to the lake with a boyfriend, a different life, and no intention of reopening the past. Then she sees the lights on across the water. Wes is back. At first, they avoid each other. Then old habits begin slipping through the cracks. A familiar look. A late-night conversation. A memory neither of them can quite leave alone. But Wes remembers the night their friendship ended differently than Kessa does. And the closer they get to the truth, the more Kessa begins to wonder whether she spent two years trying to forget something she never actually understood. Some secrets disappear with time. Others wait beneath the surface. And only the lake knows what really happened that night.
